When Fasting Turns Deadly: The Story of Mr. Baigen

But one story that haunts me most is that of Mr. Baigen, a 96-year-old stomach cancer survivor who regained perfect health with the help of Dr. Zhuang Shuqi (莊淑旂, 1920–2015). A renowned Chinese doctor trained in both Eastern and Western medicine, Dr. Zhuang became famous after successfully helping Empress Michiko and others in the Japanese Imperial Palace reclaim their health.

Here’s what happened, as shared in Dr. Zhuang’s book:

One day, Mr. Baigen came to visit her with a gift in hand.
“I’m going to the hospital tomorrow for a regular physical exam,” he said.

Dr. Zhuang was alarmed. “They’ll make you skip breakfast and lunch. Isn’t that risky at your age?”

“Don’t worry,” Mr. Baigen smiled. “I can handle skipping a meal or two.”

But the next morning, she received a call that would change everything.

“Dr. Zhuang, I’m starving. I need beef ribs—can you bring some to the hospital?”

Those were the last words she ever heard from him.

Dr. Zhuang immediately phoned his son, urging him to bring food and cancel the test.

“It’s just one more skipped meal. He’ll be fine,” his son said dismissively.

Sadly, Mr. Baigen passed away before the blood test was even performed. When the nurse arrived at 2:45 p.m., he was already gone.


Fasting Can Be Dangerous—Even Fatal

Fasting isn’t just about willpower. The body is an energy system that must be constantly charged to stay alive. Skipping meals means depriving your body of that vital energy.

In youth or good health, we can survive missed meals because our energy reserves are abundant. The body shifts into conservation mode, slowing or shutting down non-essential functions. But in the elderly, the sick, or anyone already running on low reserves, fasting can be devastating.

My own mother passed away after going without food in a hospital. So did Sara. These tragedies are not isolated incidents. They are warnings.

Even popular “wellness” fasts—juice cleanses, intermittent fasting, prolonged detox regimens—can do more harm than good if not tailored to an individual’s health condition and energy status.
